Located on the eastern side of Kaua’i, and accessed by land vehicle from Waimea via Waimea Canyon Road which is off of Hawaii State Route 50 also known as the the Kaumuali’i Highway, or from Kekaha via Kekaha Road which branches off of the Kaumuali’i Highway, Waimea Canyon State Park is informally called the “Grand Canyon of Hawaii.” It has numerous hiking trails, to include some that are difficult or more challenging.
Have your camera(s) ready and charged for this trip. There are several small pull-outs, but it would be best to have a vehicle that has a little higher clearance underneath it. If you time your return off the mountain with sunset, be prepared to be amazed.
Also, consider taking clothes and shoes that you are okay with them getting stained from the red dirt. It is possible to get the red out of your attire, but it will not be easy. You will still want to stop at the Red Dirt Waterfall.
If you are going to hike in Waimea Canyon State Park, do your homework on the trail you will be taking well before you arrive, and possibly do your training also.
